Bucharest, November 2017. Policolor S.A., Romanian manufacturer of varnishes and paints, started this spring the Color of the Year project in Romania, an action completed today by the votes of over 1000 Romanians. The Choice of Color of the Year in Romania – 2018 is Timeless Blue.

The creative people who participated with the color projects – concept at the Color of the Year 2018 are 9 of the most active, talented and consistent architects and designers of the moment in Romania. Their quality and visibility, but also the direct involvement they had in actions in the area of creative industries were the criteria that were taken into account when they were invited to participate in the Color of the Year selection initiative in Romania.

There were four proposals put to the vote – Nude, Color of Responsibility, West Blue and Timeless Blue; through them the authors brought their own vision about what can be the defining color for our country in 2018, taking into account the cultural, historical specifics and the personality of the local community.

The teams that brought them to the forefront and thought about the concepts behind them are Maria Burachu, object designer and Martine Claessens, interior designer, Andrei Butusina, architect and Eliza Yokina, architect, architects Eduard Baicu, Ionut Mandriscanu and Irina Neacsu architect, interior and object designer, Hamid Nicola Katrib, architect and interior designer and Noha Nicolescu, jewelry designer and architect.

For one month, the four color proposals were successively presented online to the general public, and another two weeks were exhibited on the Designist.ro platform dedicated to designers, architects and home & deco enthusiasts and were put to the vote. In total, 1,109 Romanians expressed their preference for one of the four colors, and the most votes, 39.22%, were for Timeless Blue. The other votes were divided as follows: 24.52% for Nude, 20.46% for Color of Responsibility and 15.68% for West Blue.

“I was looking for a frequency on which the Romanian spirit continuously vibrated. I found it materialized in tradition, over time, in the color blue, and I called it “Timeless Blue”. In Romanian folk art, blue is considered, most often, a symbol of spirituality. It is associated with truth, inspiration, creativity, tranquility, introspection and contemplation”, explains the team of Hamid Nicola Katrib and Noha Nicolescu who was behind the choice of the concept that became the Color of the Year 2018 in Romania.
“Every year, all over the world, paint manufacturers, together with the designers from the creative departments, announce the colors of the year in the world. We launched the challenge in Romania to professionals in the field to give space to local creative people in an attempt to set original trends, closer to this social and cultural space. We want to transform this project for creative Romania into an annual one, to be joined by other fields that emphasize color, good taste and set trends, from architects and interior and object designers – a professional segment that has been involved since this year – to movie directors and scenographers, furniture manufacturers, decorators and fashion designers “says Camelia Dragomirescu, marketing director of Policolor Romania.

The participating concept colors from which the Color of the Year 2018 in Romania was chosen:

Nude, team Martine Claessens and Maria Burachu

The inspiration came from the love for color and for the Romanian craft tradition and led to a proposal that expresses honesty, mastery and respect: Nude. The two designers claim that a trend should not be limited to the borders of a country to be representative, but can be a bridge that unites both members of the same community and different communities.

Color of Responsibility, team Eliza Yokina and Andrei Butusina

The participatory civic spirit of Romanians has an increasingly transcendent discourse and an increasing influence on society. The team started from this reality, from the hopes for the future and from the courage to find unity and they arrived at a concept that included them all: the Color of Responsibility, composed of blue and shades of golden yellow.

Blue West, team Eduard Baicu, Ionut Mandriscanu and Irina Neacsu

From the influences and cultures that intertwine in the national space and generate a unique and paradoxical mixture, the third proposal of the project appeared: Blue West. The three architects explained that they see Romania as “an intersection of influences and cultures that generated a paradoxical mixture. We experience the extremes, we learn the contrasts, but we always wanted an evolved, settled and mature context. That is why we aspire to the West. ”

Timeless Blue, Noha Nicolescu and Hamid Nikola Katrib

In Romanian folk art, blue is considered, most often, a symbol of spirituality. It is associated with truth, inspiration, creativity, tranquility, introspection and contemplation. Lacking materiality in itself, blue has the potential to turn the real into the imaginary. I was looking for a frequency on which the Romanian spirit vibrated continuously, over time. I found it materialized in tradition, over time, in blue, and I called it Timeless Blue.

Because all four proposals for the Color of the Year 2018 came as a result of joint debates and workshops, all the nuances brought to attention can be considered complementary in 2018
